Otto Paul Wenger Prize 2011

The prestigious Otto Paul Wenger Prize was awarded to the Institute for Numismatics and Monetary History of the University of Vienna by the Association of Swiss Professional Numismatists in a ceremony held after their 32nd annual meeting in the Villa Boveri, Baden. Professor Hubert Emmerig accepted the prize on behalf of his institute.

The “laudation” was held by Dr. Ulrich Klein, former director of the coin cabinet of the state museum in Stuttgart. Klein pointed out that the University of Vienna has been unique in the training of academic numismatists, who have made names in the scholastic as well as the mercantile field. Of special merit are the Institute’s publications such as “Repertorium zur neuzeitlichen Münzprägung Europas”, as well as the famous works of Wolfgang Hahn concerning the coins of the Byzantine Empire.

Professor Emmerig gave a short review of the Institute’s history and the bunimsatic summer seminar 2011. Applications for attendance were so numerous, that regretfully only half could be accepted. The Association of Swiss Professional Numismatists has assisted with the financing of this project.
